Bee Pham is an analytical and entrepreneurial professional currently working in the Business Intelligence department at Lazada, the leading eCommerce platform in Southeast Asia.

It doesn’t take long to see that data has been driving her career. A self-learner, Bee likes to develop new skills in order to create value for herself and her work. Currently enrolled in the online Master of Science (MSc) in Data Management and Business Analytics at EDHEC, she reflects on her first months in the programme and the benefits she expects from it.

What is your professional background?

My background is in business administration. When I enrolled, I knew that I was good at reasoning but I was not “exceptional” in natural science. During my 3rd year, I joined the Nielsen Case Competition*, which required me to analyze data. That’s when I found out that I love doing this kind of job.

Then I started to look for a job as an analyst and that’s how I started my career. Then I moved to business intelligence.

You already have technical skills in programming languages and have already followed several online courses. Why did you choose to enroll in the Online Master of Science in data management and business analytics?

Most of what I learned, I learned by myself, but there was no structure to it. When you study, you don’t see what you learn put in practice or how it can help you in business. When you start working, you actually see how helpful it can be. I realized that a strong foundation is very important, that’s why I enrolled in the Online Master of Science to close the gap. I also want to have the option to work overseas.

Right now, I’m thinking about choosing the business analytics track, as I don’t work in finance. I think with that track, I can have a more holistic view of the business.

Why did you choose EDHEC?

I had heard about EDHEC before but it’s not until I met with an EDHEC alumni, someone I really admire for his ability as a business leader, that I chose EDHEC for my MSc. I talked to him about my project and he encouraged me to try.

The admission officer was really helpful during the whole process which was also very reassuring.

What are the advantages of following an online program ?

Following an online program allows me to work and study at the same time. I learn best when I learn by myself, so when I study online, I can pause, and also use all the resources at my disposal.

Could you tell us about a specific course that you are particularly enjoying within the MSc?

I really love the “managing innovation” course. I think the professor is very knowledgeable. I like her way of teaching, which is very straightforward and logical. She also has great professional experience.

Do you think data management is a prerequisite for anyone working in that industry?

When you work in ecommerce, being comfortable with data is crucial. Everyone in my organization has to be able to read data and understand the overall business performance.

Can you share any piece of advice for our future students ?

You have to be persistent, do a little every day. I would also suggest people who are already working while studying to stay in the same company during the Online Master when everyone knows you and your process. It will make it easier.

This program doesn’t require an advanced level of programming to start. But it’s easier if you already know some programming. You don’t have to be an expert but you can follow some basic courses beforehand to know the basics and feel more comfortable.
